A bel etage is a ‘raised ground floor’ which gives an increased feeling of privacy and a larger view since it is located about a meter above street level. The apartment has its own front door and entrance. There is a hall with an under stair closet and a meter closet.
A long stately corridor with original large marble floor tiles leads all the way down to the rear part of the house. Profiled lining on the wall makes this a grand and representative hallway. There is a generous WC-room off this corridor.
The front room is a light room with high ceiling with stucco ornaments. The room features a fireplace which could be used with a stove (not provided). Pretty oak herringbone parket flooring with a burgundy borderline runs in the two main en- suite rooms. Between these two main spaces is an ‘alcove’. This has been used well as a work space.
The dining room is adjacent the kitchen and the courtyard. The kitchen is built in an arched form into the courtyard. You can access the courtyard from the kitchen or from the corridor to its side. Across from the courtyard you can see the windows from the bedrooms in the ‘rear house’. You reach the masterbedroom with built in wardrobe via a short stair a few steps down. Kromme Waal 21 is only 8 minutes walking distance from the Central Station and can be easily reached from the larger routes by car. Having said this, the particular road, Kromme Waal, is not a main thorough fare, on the contrary, it is quiet and not frequented as you might expect for a location so central in the city.
The building is listed by the municipality, it is a ‘Gemeentelijk monument’. It is situated in the area that is a listed or protected city view, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
